Russian Roulette

For the Dutch awareness campaign on hepatitis C, Mainline developed a game called ‘Russian Roulette.’ A good tool for starting up conversations in different settings and fields of work. By making up their own questions, social workers can bring up sensitive issues in a light-hearted setting. The board game can be ordered via this website, starting September 20 2010.

Research

Mainline and the Schorer Foundation conducted research into MSM (Men who have Sex with Men), substance use and high-risk behaviour. Some of the research questions were: which drugs does this group use and how does their use affect the susceptibility to infectious diseases?

Substance use among Eastern Europeans in the Netherlands

Issue

Over the past years there has been an increase in the number of Eastern European migrants coming to the Netherlands. Among them is a large group of substance users. Their situation is often problematic: many Eastern European substance users habitually inject drugs, and there is a high prevalence of HIV among this group. That is why it is important to gain insight in their drug use.

Balanced picture

Until now not much research has been conducted into Eastern European substance users in the Netherlands. The current insights in this group are fragmented. Because of issues like distrust and language problems, it can be quite difficult to get in contact with these users. Mainline conducted qualitative research to obtain a more accurate picture of this group. The research will focus on their use of substances, health, risks of infectious diseases, and living environment. The research will eventually lead to recommendations for changes to the current policy. It will also provide practical advice for professionals working in care centres that deal with Eastern European substance users.
