Fifty to sixty percent of Dutch detainees use drugs or has done so in the past. Drug use often continues within detention facilities. Infectious diseases can be transferred anywhere but pose more of a risk in prison.

Direct contact with substance users enables outreach workers from Mainline to point out and analyse new developments in different user groups. Mainline also conducts small-scale research to monitor the needs of different user groups, for which outreach workers gather data in the field.

Outreach work plays an important role in providing Mainline’s health information to hard-drug users in the Netherlands. Mainline’s outreach workers conduct informative talks with hard-drug users throughout the country, this occurs in the various centres and facilities but also on the street. During their work, the outreach workers also hand out information material like Mainline magazine.

The Mainline bus

The Mainline bus provides a mobile walk-in facility for substance users, during weekly visits of the outreach team throughout the Netherlands. Experience has shown that the bus reaches users who are (temporarily) without access to regular healthcare facilities.
