Fifty to sixty percent of Dutch detainees use drugs or has done so in the past. Drug use often continues within detention facilities. Infectious diseases can be transferred anywhere but pose more of a risk in prison.

Direct contact with substance users enables outreach workers from Mainline to point out and analyse new developments in different user groups. Mainline also conducts small-scale research to monitor the needs of different user groups, for which outreach workers gather data in the field.

The gathered data is relevant to municipalities, partner organisations, and obviously also on behalf of Mainline’s own activities.

Supporting professionals

During their work outreach workers also share their knowledge of substance-use and substance-users with professionals in for example shelters, consumption rooms and penitentiaries.  Gathered data within the field of action are also used in training for care providers and other professionals who work with substance users and want more insight in the target group, and substance use.
