Harm reduction is based on the principle that every substance user has the ability to intervene in his or her use. Every substance user also has the ability to unlock, strengthen and develop this potential.

Africa

In December 2009 Mainline researched the living circumstances of drug users in the Kenian cities of Nairobi and Mombassa. Unfortunately there is insufficient attention for harm reduction and the rights of drug users, most of whom smoke heroin.

Pakistan

Since 2006 Mainline has been working in Pakistan with its local partner Nai Zindagi. The co-operation is aimed at improving a continuum of care for HIV-infected drug users and former drug users in Islamabad.

In Pakistan drug users are often cast out of society. Nai Zindagi makes every effort to offer these people a safe environment and a future. With the help of this organisation some 550 HIV-positive drug users and their families have access to palliative care.

Mainline currently supports two of Nai Zindagi’s programmes: an agricultural and care project for HIV infected drug users and former drug users. The agricultural programme, set by the end of 2008, offers former drug users practical experience and training. The project also aims at preventing HIV and HIV-related illnesses, among others, by providing information. Family members of drug users receive counselling and guidance. Users and former drug users who do not want to participate in the agricultural project receive intensive guidance to help them find a different type of job.
